Ernest G. Brown Women’s and Children’s Center:
Expanding to Meet a Growing Community’s Needs

As the latest addition to North Central Family Medicine’s medical campus, the new Ernest G. Brown Women’s and Children’s Center in Rock Hill, SC continues the practice’s long-standing mission of providing affordable and accessible medical care to the medically underserved communities of York, Chester and Lancaster counties. J.M. Cope is honored to be part of the team helping to bring these services to the community.

Constructed on a once-blighted site—located across from North Central’s original campus—the project encountered numerous challenges from the start. Funding setbacks slowed progress as did unsuitable soils and the redesign of the fire protection system. The original architect also fell ill during the project, prompting a replacement to join the team mid-stream to assist with plan updates. A heritage tree on-site presented yet another challenge. By maintaining a 70’ diameter, the team worked around tree, enabling the unique and irreplaceable tree to be preserved.

J.M. Cope worked with the owner and stakeholder to overcome these challenges, mitigating costs and delays so that the new 15,500 SF facility —which serves the healthcare needs specific to women and children —was able to open its doors in early 2018.
