How We Started
After graduating from Clemson University in 1972, Marty Cope spent nearly ten years working for McDevitt Street in and around the Charlotte, NC, market before striking out on his own. In November 1980, he opened J.M. Cope Construction Company, Inc., a firm founded on a solid foundation of integrity, quality and faith.
In 2011, after 30 years at the helm, Marty passed the reins to his son, Andrew. As the son of J.M. Cope’s founder, Andrew grew up in the business, learning from an early age what managing a successful company required while also gaining invaluable real-world experience that sparked a life-long passion for the construction industry.
In 2003, Andrew officially joined the J.M. Cope team, serving as Project Manager and Vice President respectively. Now, as President, Andrew continues to affirm a commitment to the same core values his father embedded over 40 years ago.
Today, J. M. Cope is recognized as one of the region’s most well-respected commercial construction firms, managing roughly $82M of annual construction volume; while maintaining the values on which it was built.
